Creating Art from Trauma
This is my biggest and most personal piece of art at the time of writing, my first ever exploration of my birth trauma. As a nod to my love of anatomy, I created a page from an anatomical text book but with an illustration as brutal as my experience.
The words you can see were painstakingly embroidered over many hours, all of them said to me by family, friends and medical professionals and contributing to my eventual mental collapse. Finally, the crumpled edges, margin notes and coffee stains represent how I felt disregarded and ignored throughout the entire experience.
This piece took many months to create, and I am enormously proud of how it’s helped so many women get in touch with me about their own experiences of birth trauma.

"It was thrilling to win five awards on my first time of entering. Knowing that such seasoned medical illustrators could see the beauty and value of my art has been one of the high points of my career so far."
