My biggest and most complex piece as of July 2025, this piece took 13 months to stitch and is my best depiction yet of the complexity of birth trauma.
I Kept All of It displays the items I kept from my daughter’s infancy, from her scans to her dummy. All joyful items swathed in beautiful memories. However, nestled among them are brutal items that represent my birth trauma: chloroform and duct tape for the social silencing and rope and hammer, referring to how I felt kidnapped and brutalised by my experience. And in a nod to how birth trauma has been suffered by women since the dawn of time, I’ve included the maternity tags of my mother, grand mother and other family forbears. The complete picture is one that captures the darkness and light of life with birth trauma and I hope it adds to the growing national conversation about women’s maternal health.
